Today, the Governor and Legislative leaders reached a decisive agreement on amendments to Senate Bill 105 that would allow the state to meet a December 31, 2013 federal court order by reducing California’s prison population to 137.5 percent of capacity. The measure will avoid the early release of thousands of prisoners while keeping public safety a top priority.
The amendments include, but are not limited to:
Authorize up to $315 million in immediate in-state and out-of-state capacity. Provide a foundation for long-term change to the criminal justice system through collaborative efforts with the Legislature and stakeholders. Furthermore, AB 105 seeks to strengthen local efforts (SB 678) by increasing the amount of funding for probation departments when serving felony probationers locally and working to reduce recidivism.
